I Survived my First WOD

by Maria on January 18, 2013

I waited but finally, my prayers were answered recently when I found a Groupon for a Crossfit box in Port Chester. 10 classes for $35. How could I resist? My friends and I registered for our first class this past Sunday. We were hoping to get there Saturday but because they offered such a sweet deal, it’s been super hard to pre-register for their classes.

I have never tried Crossfit or been to a box so I had no idea what to expect. Granted, I have done most of these exercises at my traditional gym but never in a Crossfit format. Once we arrived, we presented our Groupons, signed our waivers and waited for class to start. The class was broken up into 4 parts:

  • Stretch
  • Warm Up
  • Strength
  • WOD

The warm up was pretty traditional, side shuffles, air squats, burpees, supermans, pelvic lifts. Nothing outrageous.

The strength portion was when we really focused on form for our overhead squats. We were instructed to do 2 overhead squats 5 times through (taking turns.) I found the instruction extremely beneficial as I’ve always had trouble locking out my arms during an overhead squat. We were told to push out our shoulders so our armpits faced the wall.

I think the strength portion really helped me with proper form so I was more prepared for the WOD. We had 5 rounds of overhead squats and pull-ups. I did assisted pull ups, but was still impressed with how far I’ve come since last year. My entire body was shaking by the time I was done. Despite how sore I was, I didn’t feel it. Honestly, I was in such a zone then I just pushed right through it.

My friends, Amanda and Gabe totally rocked their workouts! Amanda went un-assisted on the pull ups and Gabe was able to do the Kipping version.

We were instructed NOT to clean up until everyone was finished, and instead cheer them on. Immediately, it made me realize THIS is why people establish their Crossfit families. The support is impressive. I also love their rules, particularly #1.

The feeling I had afterwards was identical to how I felt after completing the Spartan Sprint. Pushing yourself in a new environment with a workout you have never done is SUCH a rush. I may be in love…or in trouble…or both.

While I would have loved to stay on my couch the remainder of the day, I met up with my girlfriends for brunch down the street at Volta. Perfect way to recover.

My beet, carrot, apple and ginger juice. Pretty much my favorite thing.

I went with the La Chevre omelet (egg whites, spinach, mushroom) minus the cheese. Still mighty tasty!

I couldn’t help but drool over Greg’s sweet banana, Nutella crepe.

I’m pretty psyched for more Crossfit adventures. Three day weekend ahead so I’m hoping to squeeze in 2 more classes!

Do you Crossfit?

If you do, what was your first experience like?

the first time I tried crossfit i was surprised at how hard it was, like I totally felt like I just killed a workout in about 20 minutes. it was a great feeling, sadly I haven’t been able to go back

I wish it weren’t so expensive! It’s such a great workout and while it would be easy to replicate in a traditional gym solo, it’s just not the same.

You definitely have to suck it up and believe in yourself for Crossfit. No fear for sure! Once you accomplish it – you’ll feel great!

Volta has amazing crepes!!!
