That time I ate at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain

You may have heard Mohegan Sun is hosting it’s own Restaurant Week right NOW through this Friday the 11th. I had a great plan (and outfit) to meet my blend, Cait this past Sunday for dinner at Bar Americain. However, due to some shitty and unforeseen circumstances, it didn’t happen. Instead, Cait wined and dined her sister and friend at Tuscany which you can read about here.

Various restaurants at Mohegan Sun are participating in the event and offering their own deals including pre fixed meals, or in the case of Bar Americain, 20% off your entire bill. Holy deal! So while I’m super bummed I couldn’t make it, I can’t be too bummed because I have indulged in Bobby Flay’s delicious cuisine in the past. It was this past June when I attended the Freestyle Fest at Mohegan with my pal/coworker, Bonnie. Vanilla Ice and Biz Markie were the headliners. I know… you’re pissed you didn’t know, but I heard her say he’s just a friend… ;)

Anyhow! Because it was Bonnie’s birthday, we chose Bar Americain for our fancy dinner. When we walked in we were seated right away and greeted by the nicest waitress EVER. Not only was I impressed with the service but the decor was equally nice.

To start, Bonnie ordered Pinot. I ordered a vodka soda. #notsoexciting

While we reviewed the menu, bread was served. It was a combination of regular rolls and cornbread. We agreed that we were not fans of the cornbread. It had a strange bitter taste to it which I believe was due to green pepper. Not sure what type of pepper it was but I could do without.

After asking our SUPER nice waitress 101 questions, I ended up ordering two apps as my meal, the asparagus salad and the shellfish cocktail tasting plate.

I was hoping for more asparagus but the salad was tasty just the same! I love my greens. :)

I did a bit of research on Yelp and heard wonderful things about the shellfish cocktails. While I do wish the serving sizes were bigger, it was all so good!! The tastings included a lobster/avocado mix, shrimp with tomatillo and coconut crabmeat. The lobster/avocado mix was my favorite! My least favorite was the crab. While it was good, I’m not quite sure how I feel about mixing coconut and crabmeat.

Bonnie ordered pork and her friend Jen went with the salmon. Their plates were gorgeous and they were extremely pleased.

I’m going to assume these were seasonal dishes as I do not see them on the most current menu online. If I had gone this Sunday, I would have damn sure ordered the Mahi Mahi! #wishfulthinking

Even though it was Bonnie’s birthday, we were so full from dinner that we couldn’t even think about dessert. I’m not sure how that happened, but it did. Instead, we digested, and headed over to the arena for the concert.

Not sure if the highlight of the evening was dinner or Vanilla Ice performing Go Ninja Go. It’s a toss up.

What is your favorite type of seafood?

Be honest, you’re still a fan of Vanilla Ice too…right??

In high school my cheerleading squad performed a dance to Ice Ice Baby at cheer camp. We look ridiculous but it was a lot of fun. :)

Your meal sounded great. I’m a huge fan of asparagus but don’t eat it too often! Seafood is for sure my favorite type of food, can’t get enough! I’m going to a blogger dinner for Pittsburgh’s restaurant week next week and I can’t wait.

I love the fun evenings out you have with your girl friends! So memorable. Clearly since this meal was not recent and you did an excellent job recapping. Also love how you still worked in a Restaurant Week post despite not being able to go :( that’s my resourceful, talented blend! I totally would have loved the combo you got, that asparagus looks good (but yeah that’s like 1/8 the asparagus I usually eat :P ) and mmmm shellfish tasting. I think I’d like crab and coconut! But who knows! Good to know Bar Americain serves bread upon sitting. That is a number one thing I wonder about with all restaurants #carbaholic.

Don’t you HATE when you have to ask for bread?! It’s like, um, stop being cheap!

I thought I’d be all about the crab/coconut too but the lobster and avocado was so much more flavorful!! I really wish I could have made it up this Sunday. :(
